I reached out and stroked the cat in his hands, and smiling, he turned to me.

“What are the odds the daft creature goes straight back up the tree the moment I let her go?” he said. He put the kitten down and sure enough…

We laughed and walked on, leaving the furry siren there to tempt other passersby into rescuing and making a fuss of her.

“Nearly there,” said Will. We walked along another narrow passageway, across a small stone bridge, and then turned onto a much longer wooden one. This canal was a lot wider than the others, and it was very dark – just the reflection of a few house lights on the water. He took my hand again and led me across.

“Where are we going?” I asked, halfway across. He pointed out to the water.

“Down there.”

We carried on walking, then at the end turned onto a waterside pathway.

“Careful along here,” he said. “It’s very dark.”

No shit…

“Right, here we go,” he said, letting go of my hand. “Just wait there a moment…”

He stepped onto a narrow jetty and disappeared from view. Then …

“Ta da!” he cried. Lights appeared, hundreds of fairy lights and lanterns draped around a boat. In the middle of the boat a table and two chairs had been set up, and they too were surrounded by tiny lights, twinkling, reflecting in the water so it looked like they were adrift in an ocean of stars.

“Wow!” I cried. “It’s lovely. Is this your boat?”

“Yep!” said Will, proudly. “La Sirena. The only other woman in my life. Come aboard!”

He held out his hand as I wobbled onto the boat and sat down. The Sirena wasn’t very big – there wasn’t much room around the table – but she looked sturdy enough to my eyes.

Will reached under the table and brought out a basket. “Would madam care for some refreshments?” he said. “There’s a bottle of wine under the table too, if I didn’t just kick it over. I had this vision in my head of what this would look like…I think I needed a bigger boat…”

I laughed. “Don’t worry about the wine, the food looks lovely. It all looks lovely.”

Will started to lay out food on the table.

“And here we have a selection of the finest cold meats and local cheeses…”

“Honestly, you should quit Interpol and become a waiter,” I teased.

He pretended to mull it over. “Well, I did think about it, but being a secret agent has better hours. And of course the ladies all love an international super spy…”

“Do we?” I asked.

“Don’t you? Shit…”

He found the wine – it was still upright, after all – and poured two glasses. He raised his in a toast and then stopped.

“What shall we drink to?” he asked.

“To being right here, right now,” I said. He smiled.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he said.

We drank.

“So how did you end up being an international super spy?” I said.

He laughed. “Why, are you thinking of a career change?”

“No seriously, how did you end up in Interpol? I’m interested.
